Alla tidningsbud i Hälsingland kommer att utrustas med ett larm (+ eventuellt en elektronisk budbok i maj-juni 2008). Det är Tidningstjänst (TAB) som kommer att införa ett system pga. av risken för överfall på buden.

The web site as a complement to the printed edition
Mr. Hussman, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette says that they make the newspaper and the web site with different content, which have increased the circulation on the print. What they can not do in the newspaper they do on the web site. For example video, more pictures etc.
Hussman says that in a comparison their circulation increased while other newspaper declined.
Mr. Hussman says: So what are we doing with our Web site? We have hired a videographer to complement our text coverage in the newspaper. We have added photo galleries to increase the number of photographs beyond what we can publish. We offer an electronic edition where you can search the entire edition by keywords, something you can't do in the print edition. And we offer breaking news email alerts, something else you can't do in print. In other words, we are offering value on our Web site that complements, rather than cannibalizes, our print edition.

What I miss is how much they miss out in income from the online by charging for the news on their web site. In all businesses you always have to look at alternative income and losses from your different products. But saving one product by not doing something that the audience wants might be a mistake on the long term. However, using the web site by doing what it is good for compared to the printed newspaper is a good decision (but I think most media houses actullay do that and not just shovel the content from the newspapaper to the web site.

Morning delivery to the readers homes drive circulation - at least it is crucial for keeping the circulation
Even if the article is old, the convenient part seems to be true in these days as well. If you are able to get your newspaper just outside your door, you will be more willing to pay for your newspaper. In Sweden the national post will close down the mail boxes in the doors in apartments. I believe that the publishers still need to deliver the newspapers to the door in order to keep the circulation as it is today. However, this is of course not the only thing that needs to be done in order to increase or keep the circulation. The newspaper also needs to be developed in format, design and content.

Ifra Managing Distribution

Ifra arranged their yearly conference Managing Distribution in Istanbul last week, 31st of May and the 1st of June. Piet Bakker from University of Amsterdam had a great presentation about the free newspaper circulation and strategy. He said that one of the first managers you hire is the circulation/distribution manager, since a free newspaper is more of distribution business than an editorial business. Piet Bakker also writes the blog
